Gateway CrystalScan 1024 ni monitor modeline

I recently set up X under Linux on a machine using a Gateway 1024 ni monitor. It was quite an unpleasant experience, taking me back to my early experiences with X under Linux, back when it took some real work to get a working modeline.

Lately, I've just run one of the several X configurators, and had X simply work. I'd assumed that the software had gotten better, but getting this old monitor to work makes me think that newer monitors are more flexible.

When the configurators did not work, I looked in good ol' /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors, it listed one Gateway, the "Gateway 2000 CrystalScan 1776LE". Did it work? No. I did wind up using the "HorizSync 30-64" and "VertRefresh 50-120" though.

Then I did a web search and found several other modelines. None worked, but one was close enough that I could sort of see what was happening on the screen. I tweeked this until I got a fairly workable modeline for 800x600. Here it is:

ModeLine "800x600" 30.00 800 840 880 936 600 600 601 618

I never did get a working 1024x768 modeline, despite the promise of the model name. If I ever do, I'll post it here, but don't hold your breath, I'll likely replace the darn thing long before then...

Update in 2005:

This monitor died not too long after I posted this article. In any case, it would be a quaint antique no, just four years later. So are modelines...
